Today Wikipedia will be performing a complete blackout of its online website in protest of SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), a bill that has been alive since October 26, 2011, and a bill that has faced many opponents. Not only Wikipedia is protesting, sites like craiglist, Reddit, and Wired Magazine’s online page have followed suit. A lot of people, despite the amount of attention it has gotten in recent weeks, still have no idea what exactly SOPA is, and what it really means to them. Questions still arise, and a lot need to be answered, because the freedom of the Internet you use every day is at jeopardy.
Wikipedia’s blackout is a statement that is being made to show people that websites they use everyday, be it for information or entertainment, are at risk from being shut down entirely.
